Background of the Study
Childhood malnutrition is a critical public health issue in Nigeria, particularly in northern states like Bauchi, where poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare exacerbate the problem. According to UNICEF (2023), malnutrition accounts for nearly half of all child deaths in low-income regions, with stunted growth, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies being the most common outcomes. Pediatric nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a pivotal role in addressing this challenge by delivering timely and effective interventions.
The responsibilities of pediatric nurses in malnutrition management include nutritional assessment, education for caregivers, administration of therapeutic feeds, and monitoring of growth and recovery. These nurses are also involved in community outreach programs to identify at-risk children and prevent the onset of malnutrition. Despite their significant contributions, the impact of pediatric nurses in managing childhood malnutrition in Bauchi State remains under-researched.
Challenges such as understaffing, inadequate training, and resource constraints limit the effectiveness of pediatric nurses. Nonetheless, understanding their role and impact is critical for improving child health outcomes in this region, where malnutrition continues to threaten the development and survival of children under five years.
Statement of the Problem
Bauchi State faces an alarming prevalence of childhood malnutrition, with limited success in curbing the issue despite ongoing interventions. Pediatric nurses, essential for the management and recovery of malnourished children, often operate under challenging conditions, including high patient loads, insufficient training in specialized care, and lack of access to nutritional supplements. These constraints hinder their ability to deliver effective care.
Although pediatric nursing is recognized as vital for combating malnutrition, there is inadequate empirical evidence quantifying their impact in Bauchi State. This gap in knowledge impedes the development of targeted strategies to enhance their role in addressing childhood malnutrition.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of pediatric nurses on the management of childhood malnutrition in Bauchi State. It evaluates their roles, challenges, and the outcomes of their interventions in primary and secondary healthcare settings. Limitations include potential variability in caregiver responses and limited access to comprehensive health records.
